I have a Mali Uro and a Niger living in the same tank and both are doing extremely well. I rescued the Niger from a pet store after it began to lose extreme weight - they had it titled "red uromastyx." Anyways, my Mali is definitely a male, but I'm not sure of the sex of the Niger. I've had it for about 3-4 months and it is now very...rotund. It eats just about everyday - they both will only eat red leaf lettuce with split peas and bird seed. I'm wondering now if the Niger is gravid - is this possible? My Mali will sit on top of the Niger, but I've never seen breeding behavior. It could just be a tubby little Uro, but how would I know for sure? Anyone know how to properly sex a Niger?

Geyri (Niger/Saharan) are usually fairly easy to sex once they're a year or two old. MOST of the time, males have a brightly colored belly with black tiger stripes while females have white or cream and usually just a hint of stripes. Males are generally larger with broader, more triangular jaws and are often more brightly colored in general. Best bet for you is to look at the belly and check - red or white.

It's white but the black from the back runs down onto it, so it's kind of a white with black over the top. So I guess my next few questions to you would be:
Can the two species interbreed?
Has anyone dealt with just a plain overweight uro before? I mean, he/she is really hefty.

is it possible to breed them-yes
will the eggs be any good-no idea
it has not been done that i know of.
from the pics of they are recent i would say they are both a healthy size and not overweight.
the niger does not look gravid from these pics but its hard to say
good luck with them
