? about fancy mice

adamjeffery Dec 14, 2009 01:08 AM

i know this is a feeder forum but i also know many of you breed fancy mice for either food or pets.
i just picked up a trio and was wondering about their size.
they seem smaller that my feeder mice and the one looks pregnant.
just wondering if they are a smaller breed or if they are just still young. ill post pics tomorrow.
thanks in advance.

My fancy mice have always been smaller than the mice I got from a feeder food guy. I fed off my fancy mice and just keep the bigger white mice now. I got mine from a local retile show that has a mice seller there. Told him I want 4 girls amd a male and he sold them to me. Got more babies per each girl.

I started off with fancy mice for the same reason but I did not sell them. I just wanted to see what colors I could get and when I started breeding mice the pet stores only had fancy mice on display so that is what I bought. Have fun

fancy mice and feeder mice are the same, only difference is the typical feeder mouse is the white/red eyed version of fancy mice.

If they are unusually small, they are probably pretty inbred. I suggest breeding them to live white feeder mice to get more size...or find out if all the local pet stores get their mice from the same supplier. If not, buy one sex from one place and the other sex from the other place, to get cleaner genes.

However, it is also possible the mice you have are just young. Males and female mice can breed by 5 weeks of age. Waiting till they are at least 8 weeks before breeding is best..gives them more time to grow.

Just so you are aware, the demand for pet mice isn't very high...you may find it hard to find good homes for the babies consistently, unless you intend to sell them back to the pet store or have a wholesaler (though these often require a health check). I bred fancy mice for fun but most of the offspring I fed to my snakes or sold as feeders.
