Caught new turtle!

jck9 Dec 14, 2009 08:21 PM

Hey guys!
I live near a pond that has lots of turtles in it and i thought it would make a good pet!
I found a nice adult one and I caught it yesterday!
I think it is an eastern painted turtle it matches a pic on the internet.
I have it in a 20 gallon with just enough water to cover its shell!
What elce do i need?

You would be better off releasing that turtle back into the wild and buying a captive bred and raised painted or red-eared slider either at a pet shop, reptile show, or internet. Wild caught animals do not make a good pet for more reasons than I have time to list here, sorry. Look around and do your homework, and then when you are ready, buy a captive born and raised animal, they aren't hard to find nor expensive.

I would honestly suggest you return it to the wild. Turtles that are taken from the wild to be kept as pets usually get sick and die or just don't do well after being taken from the wild. If you want a turtle as a pet go to a local pet store or shelter near you and get one from there. They are a lot of turtles that need homes out there. Please return the turtle to the wild or else you very well could kill it.

Also if you were thinking of keeping that adult turlte in a 20 gallon tank you need to do a little bit of research. an adult turtle should have around 75 gallons of water for swimming, atleast 50 gallons. They also need special UV lights, water filters, and water heaters.

How about return it to the wild. You have it in a 20 gallon
tank. That would be like putting you in a closet and never letting you out. If you truly want a turtle do your research
first and then adopt one from a rescue or get one from a breeder.

I see it time after time. Someone decides they are going to take a turtle (or anything) from the wild and it ends up dying within a years time because it is not cared for properly and the intitial interest is gone.

Don't mean to sound nasty but I have ended up with several of these turtles.

Hopefully you will do the right thing!
Linda
