Rat and mice waste as fertilizer?

phred136 Dec 16, 2009 07:08 AM

I'm just curious if anyone uses their rodent bedding for fertilizer. Every google search I run on the subject seems to discuss ways of killing rats around a farms compost pile.
I have about 900 sq. ft. of garden area to work with so it wouldn't ever have to be piled up in one place for long.
All of my rodents are on pine shavings and are fed Mazuri 6F 30.
Any ideas, tips or links would be appreciated. Thanks!

lots of ammonia in rodent urine. not sure how that would effect plants. other than the ammonia i see no problem with it

A friend who breeds alot of rats. Puts all the shavings into a pile than turns the pile. I talked to a guy along tim ago that composted alot of stuff. Fish carcasses and all. He said if you compost it hit. It would break down faster. The friend got so much bedding he started giving it to the nursery next door they use it in their compost piles.

hhmmmm... Maybe i'll start another composte pile just for the rodent bedding. I would imagine that if turned enough the ammonia would evaporate off of the pile. Then i'll have to try it on a control group of plants to see if there is any difference in thier growth. Guess i'll let everyone know what happens in the fall.

I always just put the used shavings in the beds around my place and never had a problem. Even use it in low spots in the yard. Dump it rake it out to your liking and be done with it. Your plants and grass will love you for it.
