Red Foot with ulcers

Chrissyo67 Dec 20, 2009 04:16 PM

I have an 8 month old RF with ulcerations on both sides of her mouth right where it joins the jaw. She is active, eating and the inside of her mouth is perfectly normal. Her shell and color is beautiful and healthy. What can this be? I was having trouble regulating the temp in her enclosure, but seem to have that under control. Any suggestions?

Hi. Just a couple of questions. What are you feeding her and what kind of lighting do you use?(if she is inside) Are the areas getting worse? It's really hard to tell exactly what it may be. Try finding a vet in your area or contacting one that has good knowledge of tortoises. Also you maybe able to find a breeder with experience as well. Until then, lets start with the basics.

Thanks for the reply. As far as diet, she eats kale, dandilion greens, brocolli, a little apple or pear, green bean, romaine lettuce, carrot, etc. I am assuming maybe it was because I was having trouble controlling the heat for a while. I seem to have that under control now. She is almost normal again, but if I'm doing something wrong, I'd love to know now.

The diet sounds pretty good. Do you offer a supplement with D3? Also do you have a UVB light of some kind? Also protien is important to offer them once in a while. My breeding pair get a cut up boiled egg once a week along with a diet similar to the one you described. I'm glad she's looking better.I'll try and direct you to a couple good websites that list some good husbandry tips and diets as well. Go to Reptilechannel.com until then. You can find some good info in there on redfoots.

Thanks, I didn't know about the egg. Yes she has a UVB light and vitamin supplements. I appreciate all of you help.

redfoot.com is by far the best info out there on redfoots.I've followed the diet on there (along with everything else) since day 1 of getting my redfoot and he is awesome and healthy.

It took a few weeks for mine to come around from piss poor conditions he was living in at the store I got him from.I guess keeping a redfoot in a desert set up..sand,no water,100degrees and 0 humidity would put a beating on him.

Now he's alert full of personallity and comes running like a dog at dinner time.Follow their guidelines and you should be fine.
Good luck!

Dan
