Trying something new with my 1.2Spilotes

FFEMT3112 Dec 23, 2009 03:36 PM

housing my spilotes 1.2 group in a 6T x 2D x 2W cage....Little nervous about housing them together, as i usually keep them separate. I would like to have more vertical space...and I'm also working on some branches for the upper parts of the cage. I am temporarily using 11" wide flex watt 3'. Heats the cage well from 90 on the right down to 76ish on the left...night drops down around 70. I am awaiting the arrival of my RHP which should be here this week. Any suggestions or comments? fire away. I will work on getting some pics of the actual snakes, but they don't like to play much.

I would not worry too much about keeping the pair together. I had a pair together for three years until the male died.

I never did get eggs but breeding seemed to be triggered by changes in the humidity. That being said I would use something different for a substarte that can hold humidity a little better.

The female I had would love to climb, so some branches probably would not hurt. The only problem is when I had to take her out the branch had to come with her.

Here is a pic of my old male. He probably died of old age. He was a w/c import so no telleing how old he was.

I'm currently using a mix and aspen and sphagnum moss. It seems to hold the humidity right about 60 % or so. I'm thinking I'm going to run a couple pieces of PVC pipe across the top of the cage for them to climb on until i find the perfect branch to clean up and place inside. Here's a short video of two females, the male is under the hide box on the left. He can usually be found in the bird nesting box as I use as a hide. I'm thinking of mounting it to the wall of the cage to make it somewhat of an arboreal hide.

I would house them together if you have breeding plans in their future..they need to get to "know" each other. Do watch out if any are intimidated by the others during feeding time..some will be reluctant in the presence of others in a group setting. Vertical orientation isn't as important as overall space. a 4'x4'x3'high served my trio well. I would also change bedding..looks like pine or aspen in your cage thats pictured? orchid bark or cypress will work much better as you'll need to spray heavily and frequently to induce breeding...the former types of bedding may gel up if kept wet on a frequent basis.

I think will go ahead and switch to orchid bark or the cypress mulch. I'll just have to see if i can find some floating arounding out there. I separate them when i go to feed them, I place them in 3 separate underbed storage boxes.

Thanks for the advice.
