Most albino RES are blind or go blind?

Lia Dec 23, 2009 06:41 PM

Hi
Is it true most albino RES are blind or go blind?

I have been looking into them but was told by area pet store no guarantee that it wont be or go blind and most are blind.

Thank you

For the most part this is true. Almost all albinos have very very poor eye sight or are blind. I have heard some with age get a little better sight but right now I have 3 yearlings and 1 2 year old and the yearlings have pretty little to no sight and the 2 year old can see a little bit. I can tell mainly from when I feed them, they just swing crazy like and bit at random places to try and get some food where the 2 year old can kind of see it and just has to try once or twice to accually get some of his food.

It doesnt really see to cause any problems other then its hard for them to find food but if you just feed them in the same side of the tank then they will get it or just feed them one at a time in a small container they can find the food easier.

Thank you very much this was a lot of help and helped me decide not to get an albino.

I have a pond in yard (Miami)with some 1 yr old map turtles and was interested in an albino RES . RES are illegal here bnut not the color morphs .

They eat turtle pellets and pond has rosy red minnows and mosquito fish . I had planned to buy a small not baby albino RES but now will skip it as a pond isnt good for blind turtle.

Thank you
