Size Vs. Age Re: Fertility

vegasbilly Dec 24, 2009 03:17 PM

I received a comment the other day regarding my 11' female Bar Neck being "iffy" in regards to a successful breeding. The inference is she's not big enough. I grow my snakes slowly, I received her 4 years ago as a 3' snake so its taken some time for her to attain 11'. I'm assuming she's app. 5-6 years old now. W/power feeding I'm sure its possible to have a younger snake at 11'. My question is at what point, if any, does age trump size in regards to fertility? Personally I'll take age over size all things being equal but am curious to others' takes on this.

So many people powerfeed, trying to get their snakes ready to breed before they're really ready. I'd rather have a snake that's going to be with me for 20 plus years than die from stressed organs at a young age. Our male jungle carpet x diamond (supposedly) is about six and a half feet. Some people say he's too small for his age, he's almost five years. But he's healthy, not overweight and very active--making him much more attractive.
