Help! I think my leo is dying!

honeycomb9000 Dec 25, 2009 10:25 AM

For the past week my gecko has been very inactive, hasn't been eating, and will constantly sleep. I haven't noticed much in the area of weight loss, but I recently (like last week) lost another gecko to the same conditions. There is looses, even flaking skin all over his body, and it seems to be hurting him to walk. We removed the curtains from my window and set his tank on my bed. He immediately got up, walked over to the nearest edge of the tank to the window, and lay down to resume sleeping. There are dark rings around his eyelids. I have no idea what's wrong, or how to help him.

There are so many things that could be wrong, it is difficult for anyone to know without seeing him or knowing backround, temps, lighting if any, food, suppliments, and could even be parasite related. It's kind of quiet here on the forum, and I'm sorry I do not have much experience with leo's yet to be of help. But I have many years experience with other species to know when something is very wrong.....

I think the best thing is to have a vet experienced with reptiles look at your leo as soon as ya can before it is too late. Let us know how you do!

We need more info to try and help. Does he have an under tank heater? Does he have a light schedual? Does he have a moist hide? Is there a small dish of calcium with D3 in his cage? Does he have a fresh dish of water in his cage? What are the temperatures in the cage there should be a warm side and a cool side? Has his food been gutloaded and dusted since you got it?
As for the flaking of the skin sounds like he could use a nice soak in luke warm water in the sink.

Temp has been raised from 75 deg to 80 deg
been bathing him twice a day, yes there is a calcium
dish w/ d3 in his tank and he's quite a bit more
active now. My new problem is that he won't eat.
Can anyone help there?

When you say you raised the temps to 80 is that the basking spot? The hot spot in the cage should be closer to 90F and 75 to 80 for the ambient temp. Also the bathing isnt really necessary I dont think. They are from a dry place, If you feel like its helping for now thats fine but I wouldnt continue it. If you get the heat up though that should increase his metabolism help him eat again. And Instead of using a calcium dish I would just dust the crickets 2times a week. This way you can make sure he gets the it, and also if they were to eat to much thats not good either. Also keep in mind with the eating thing that it isnt very uncommon for leos to go off feed for a few weeks. espescially in the winter. I have a few every winter that will only eat 3 or 4 crickets for a few weeks and never have a problem. anyways I am no expert but I have been keeping leos for quite a few years so I figured I would try and help. good luck!

You need to raise his temps so there is a basking spot that is 90 degrees. Keep the dish of calcium in his cage he will lick it if he is not getting enough from the dusting. He don't need to be soaked daily that may affect his temps and metabolism. Some geckos do go on a cycle of not eating during the winter and that maybe what is happening this could last from a couple weeks to a couple months where they eat minimally. It is imporant for him to have a moist hide this helps him regulate his body temps and with shedding. The moist hide could be a container with shredded papertowels that are moistened daily, or a container with peat moss in it that is kept moist or a container with vermiculite that is kept moist. You also didn't mention if he had an undertank heater which is a must. Post a pic so we can see him that may help

Took my Leo to vet today. Turns out it is a burn from
the lamp I was using. We got several different meds,
but were told to get an undertank heater. Any tips on
what kind/ brand to buy?

Thank you all for your wonderful advice but, despite my best efforts
Winston has died. Thank you all so much.

Really sorry to hear about your leo. Its rare that a person would care as much as you did. Most people wouldnt even get on a forum to try and help a leo much less take it to the vet. If you do decide to get another I would definitely go with a heat pad, and a light that doesnt put off much heat if you want it for aesthetics. I would also recommend getting a thermostat or some kind of regulator because a lot of heat pads get to hot.
