Ventral scale count for sexing JCP...

SouthernSerpent Dec 25, 2009 05:54 PM

Does anyone have an accurate number for the scale count when probing jungle carpets to determin sex? I have two that are supposed to be male and female, but I would like to double check them. Both are between five and six feet long? Is that too small for breeding? One is four years old and the other is five or six years old. Thanks for any help.

For mature adults it is typically 3 to 4 for females and 8 to 10 for males.

Thanks Kelly for the information. My wife and I have probbed them before and were unsure of the count. We counted 4 a piece on each one. I guess I got stuck with two females. Unfortunately the prettier one is a nightmare to deal with. The not so pretty one is very pretty on the inside. She is a doll to work with and handles very well. The pretty one has escaped twice and tried to bite my wife both times. I have to use a long hook on her and be quick to put her back in the cage. I guess the long search for a suitable male will begin now. Thanks again for your help.

Honestly, I wouldn't agree with that at all, Morelia and Probing isn't reliable. Morelia are notorious for being hard to sex etc, and growing up babies to find out you have two males instead of a pair, just be glad you got two girls.

Some Females will go as deep as 8-9, with males as low as 9, even had an extreme case of a female going to 14. I would judge it more by feel than by scale count, if it goes in real deep without trying It'd be safe to assume you got a male, and vice versa.

Id Suggest you get real comfortable with popping, baby carpets need to be popped its the only way to be sure about sexes with the morelia.

I keep carpets, lots of them.

Popping would be a good way to determine sex I'm sure, but I'm dealing with two full grown adults. I'm going off a strong four scale count by probbing on each of them. Went in and stopped solid. I'm just trying to get my money right so I can pick out a male to breed to them, cause they are both going to produce some very nice babies upon breeding. Thanks to everyone for helping on scale counts though. I have learned something new and that's what counts.
