Avg GTP Weights

rudys119 Jan 04, 2010 09:09 PM

I just got my GTP back from the vet to get her sexed. (Found out she is a girl) and she was weighed while there and the vet said she weighed 385.4. She is about 3 years old and I was looking into trying to breed her with a friend of mines male. I read somewhere that the females need to be around 2 pounds to be ready for breeding. She just dosent seem all that small compared to most other adults I have seen. What is an average weight for a girl her age? She is eating a small rat ever week or two.

Most of us weigh in at grams, not pounds. Recommended weight for breeding is around 800-1000 grams. That said, I've bred my 5 year old female who weighs less than 800 grams (around 760). There is no way she would ever get to 800-1000 unless I fed her way too much and made her fat. Your female is much too small to breed. I think it's best to wait anyway. We tend to overfeed and bring snakes up to breeding weight quickly as we are impatient. I've gone very conservative these days since having one of my animals prolapse and as a result, they grow more slowly.
