My BRB regurgitating a large rat, ILL!

Ghattaka Jan 06, 2010 08:07 AM

Hey I was wondering if anyone has had their BRB, or anyother breed of snake regurgitate a meal after a week if digesting??? My initial thoughts are that it is due to the rat being too large. It certainly was the biggest rat i've fed her. She's almost 3 yrs old and approx 5 ft long. As slender as a small>medium rat. Should I be worried??? She's been pretty finiky about eating since fall came around. Been going over 3 weeks til she gets interested in feeding. Til this fall, things were running like clockwork.
The temp of tank hovers around 90. 55 gallon long tank.

is that just the hot side of the tank? If its the entire cage, then the temperatures are way too hot. BRB's tend to like ambient temps around 75F with a hot spot of about 85-90F.

I also suggest posting this in the rainbow boa forum, far more likely to get good feedback there, than the feeder forum which is more geared towards the raising and breeding of feeder rodents and insects to be used as food.

A single regurg normally isn't an issue, however if your temps are too cold or too hot, that certainly can cause regurgitation and should be addressed immediately. If the rat you fed your boa left a very large bulge in her, then definitely too large prey item, though I have fed larger than typical rats to my BRB's without any ill effects though I don't do it often, maybe once or twice a year (typically retired breeder rats which my adult ball python won't eat first). I tend to feed small to medium rats to my adult BRB's normally, about once every 10-15 days.
