Nice, please post some pictures when they start getting their adult colors. Where did you get them from?

FFEMT3112 Jan 14, 2010 09:28 PM

I picked up the group from Exotic Pets of Las Vegas. I will keep updates going on them.

I was interested in these along with a buddy of mine but when I asked some west coast zoo friends of any zoos that have Pseustes I got a bunch of "no zoo's out here" for answers so I got skeptical but they look awesome!!! Funny thing is I probably would have bought them if they never mentioned "zoo stock" in the add but since they did I started digging. Keep us updated if you can confirm any info on locality and keep the pics coming as they grow. If they are Central American in origin they might be spectacular adults!!

I also questioned the whole zoo thing as well, but I got what seemed like a pretty good answer. I only know of one zoo that works with Pseustes poecilonotus. If you care to trade info feel free to shoot me a pm, I don't want to openly out my source, but so far I'm pretty happy with them.

I almost purchased these guys when I saw them, looks like you beat me to it. Thats why I asked where you picked them up from-they looked like the ones at Ken's shop.

I saw the sold tag before you posted this so I figured I would ask. Very cool, again please update us when they start getting their colors in that should be fun.

Pretty sure all the cb are from Bushmaster..I had a few brokers I know call me and ask if I wanted any...same time Ken got those in.

You've got Boiga, Spilotes and Pseutes... Now all you need is Ptyas to have all the mean and nasty big colubrids.

amazingly enough none of them are to nasty yet. The Pseutes sulphereus was a nightmare when I first got him. He has calmed down greatly and he is very alert. Whenever I clean his cage I let him hang out and he just watches. heres the link to my youtube page or if you want PM and Ill give you my Facebook being as your a fellow Firefighter. I'm just south of Kansas City Missouri.

I inquired about those snakes as well. I was waiting for Ken to get them feeding on pinks before I bought them, and I guess that never happened as he never contacted me. Are they feeding for you? If so, what are they taking?

I ended up buying a large group from a different source.
Half of them have refused all food and the others have fed sporadically on chick parts.

Anyone have baby Pseustes feeding tips?

I got mine from Ken also.

As for feeding - it took about two weeks but now they will take the smallest of pinks. They are even taking F/T now.

Have you tried putting the snake in a small paper bag with the pinky?

Yani Jan 20, 2010 08:19 AM

I will now...

You didn't scent?

No scenting. I have used egg yolk before.............

They process those pinkies fast. After three days they are looking for more.

SoLA Jan 20, 2010 09:10 PM

Looks like I was one of many to inquire about them. Depending on locality, you might have gotten a spectacular deal. If I could have found out the locality info I would have snatched them up in a heatbeat. And unfortunately all baby P. poecilonotus look very similar.

As for feeding, I tease most off tongs. Some actually do well if you piss them off a bit by bumping their body. Once it their mouth, if you keep still, they usually eat. Some are much harder than others, but if you wear them out a bit (as they have tons of energy), they usually give in and eat instead of throwing the food backward and darting out of the enclosure.

One of my adult actually is very very shy and will not eat if you try this. She is also highly likely to regurgitate after any stress, so leaving the food in over night is better.

All of mine are on f/t, but I have given live to the stubborn adult female and she usually takes.

If you offer secure areas off the ground and put the food there, you might have a better chance too. Or leaving food with them while they are in a hide.

Bird scenting is also good.

skiploder Jan 20, 2010 10:34 PM

My little female was the hardest to get going.

For a while she would only take the pinks if they were in my hand (held between the thumb and forefinger).

She absolutely ignored them on tongs. It took a while to figure out she was cueing on on the heat from my fingertips. Now I just dip the heads in hot water and she nails them immediately.

Just out of curiosity - does any one know which zoos in the U.S. have them and if so, what locality are they from?

Does anyone have any information on how long it takes to reach sexual maturity? I know it is also probably size related. But I have a pair of two year olds (almost 4ft)and I am hoping in another year that they might be ready. On a feeding note, mine have always been shy and are just now actively taking mice off tongs, however they are really good about scavenging and I just leave the mouse in the cage overnight and its almost always gone in the morning.

Bob,

My Costa Rican Pseustes poecilonotus are each about 6ft. I tried breeding last year and got a double clutch of infertiles (was very upset about this). There are things that tell me a portion of this had to do with the size of the female.

My male was the better eater at the time and he was in the 840g range during breeding, she was only in the low 700g area. Now I am keeping temps a little lower in the male enclosure and feeding a little less. They are both about the same weight now in the 825-845g range. The plan is to keep him fed light and keep her pumped up for just a little longer before putting them back together.

I got my pair in Feb 2006 weighing 206g (M), and 176g (F)
They were probably yearlings at a minimum when I got them, possibly closer to two years.

Also, I thought it might be good to note that offering larger meals might be beneficial, as they fill their huge mouths well and make it easy to grip and push down.

Here is the start of my records on the last hatchling I got (likely before first shed)

Acquired 9-9-09 Weighed 14g (shed the day I got it)
(9-10-09) O 1 f/t (5g) hairless mouse –T (11:30 pm)
(9-24-09) O 1 f/t (4-5g) hairless mouse – T (10:30 pm)

FFEMT3112 Jan 21, 2010 12:43 PM

all 3 of mine have taken F/T tiny tiny pinks, i just drop them in and come back in a few hours and they are gone.

Awesome Brad! I thought the slightly larger meal offering would just be something for people to try if they weren't having success with pinks. Genetically hairless mice are another thing to try for people who are having a little trouble. I keep saying I am going to write a paper on these things, but have not gotten around to it.

I have a Coniophanes that eats nothing but genetically hairless mice.

I'm trying to keep very detailed records in hopes to write a nice care/info sheet on them. They also seem to be very inquistive snakes. They will watch me do everything around the room.

I also obtained a pair of Pseustes poecilonotus from Exotic Pets in Las Vegas. My hatchlings are not taking pinkies, even live ones. Do you have any suggestions to induce a feeding response? I have tried putting them individually with a live pinky in a paper bag but have had no luck with that either. Do you think putting anole scent on a pinkie (live or dead) might induce a response?

Malcolm

You can try split braining a frozen thawed pink

Thanks for the great information Sola. It sounds like if you are getting eggs but they were infertile that the problem might be with the male rather than the female. I hope we can get someone producing these in the states on a regular basis.
Best wishes,
Bob H

SoLA Jan 22, 2010 05:38 PM

I have made some changes in decisions with the male this year, but some differences in the second clutch from the first led me to conclude I also needed to make changes with the female, which included having her a little larger.

Very nice! Do these get as big as the Yellows?
