Rescued gators in bad shape

hbelo Jan 20, 2010 12:54 PM

Hi,

I just received 3 gators with bad sores on there digits and some with slight mouth rot. In the past I've dealt with gators that are malnourished, but I have never dealt with this problem. Has anyone ever dealt with this issue before? I know most people would suggest that I take them to the vet, but here in New Hampshire its hard to find a vet who will even look at an American Alligator over 2 feet and these guys are 3 feet. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Hbelo

Can you send out a picture? There are different types of infections requiring different treatments. Most can be cured by cleaner conditions, warmer water and good food. The alligator immune system is amazing. One of our 7 footers had his front arm ripped off (by a unfriendly female) and he healed up quite well. We are thinking about getting him a "peg leg" so he can get around on land better. A picture will encourage more responses from this forum. If its bad a Vet is still your best bet.
Good Luck.
