Breeding cages for Spilotes

varanus Jan 26, 2010 08:22 AM

I am looking to set up caging for a trio of spilotes I have been raising in a large rack system and was wondering what size cages would be best for breeding purposes in their adult enclosures. These animals are captive born and have been raised in tubs. Any and all suggestions and tips on getting them to breed down the road would also be wonderful! Thanks!

due to their large size & active style, i'd go w/ no less than 4'x 4'x 2' as these snakes are superior display animals & the payoff will be well worth it. here are 2 cages i used, a converted china closet & then when they outgrew that i built them an ark. lol! it's 6'x 5'x 2', practically a flight cage for a macaw but they really enjoyed it & so did i. good luck!

Nice cage! I assume it must be in a heated room from the screen front. Did you ever have any issues with them rubbing on the screen?

yes, my snake room is heated & no, they do not rub on the screening although perhaps some wild caught's might. some of the main advantages of using screening are the cages aren't heavy at all, it allows tons of natural light in & actually keeps their living quarters fresher as it allows good air flow. here's another big one [8'] i built for my cribos but is now occupied by 2 monster bullsnakes.......
