Ovulation or Pre ovulation swell? (PICS)

Z_G_Reptiles Jan 26, 2010 09:09 AM

I walked into my herp room lastnight after work to check on everyone and my female blood looked HUGE. I'm thinking this might be her pre ovulation swell since last year she looked like she swallowed a softball when she ovulated but I cant tell if this is just part of the ovulation process, what do you guys think? the pictures don’t really show how big she really looks but it gives you an idea. Last year she laid 24 eggs including 5 duds.

Thanks
Zack

LOL I cant respond because I dont breed and have NO clue what either look like.

Unfortunately I think too many posts are going to the wayside with the current political stuff. Politics are taking over.

Looks like ovulation to me..or at least she has that tail suck ball pythons tend to get in ovulation and she really does look huge compared to the male (both the snake and male arm in the last picture LOL)

Oh and Slacker, I noticed way back near the bottom of this page you were asking whether rats are more nutritious than small rabbits...maybe this chart may help you figure that out.

What I can figure out it looks like rabbits have more protein and fat level but don't seem to have as good a calcium/phosphorus ratio...(though not sure if this is as important with snakes as it is with lizards).

Does she look like she is going into a shed at all?

Is she still accepting courtship?

This swelling has gone down ALOT, This pair is very recluse, last year I only caught them in the act twice, this year I caught them maybe once, they are still by each other but this pair is always like that, very hard to read these 2 I think. She also keeps an amazing feeding responce while gravid so I can't go by that eather. I dont see her in shed at the moment but last year she didnt really follow the book eather. I may just seperate them to feed and leave them together untill she gets swollen and stays that way to be sure.
Pic of her pre ovulation last year

THanks

Zack, Still and forever learning here too..You say ovulation or pre ovulation..I don't know as, still learning but I was under the impression that the swell was ovulation, the gathering of follicles to travel the repro tract to be fertilized..Once this has occurred there is normally an increase in the latter half of the animal..The process continues here until the product is ready for delivery..Which depending on environmental factors takes varying amounts of time..Cooler= longer, warmer = shorter and of course whether the eggs were fertilized or not..Variables.

I dont think I'll ever understand it fully, lol, but that seemed to be a pre ovulation swell last year because this is what it looked like when she truely ovuleted (I Think, LOL) it looked as if she swollowed a softball about 2/3 down her body

Pic of what I believe was a pre ovulation swell

Pics of her actual ovulation

and a pic of her gravid

Thanks Zack
