ALBERT..MY KING COBRA

TOM_CRUTCHFIELD Jan 26, 2010 02:53 PM

This is "Albert" my user friendly King Cobra. I named him after a dear friend who gave him to me. He's around 11' long and seems to like me [so far at least]. I feed him Fl. Burmese Pythons which he eats with relish [not like the hot dog type]...LOL

That's a very robust and healthy-looking King, Tom-having access to his natural prey evidently agrees with him...

I don't think that snake ever belonged to Albert. A friend of mine Sloane, was the owner of the snake and he let Albert as a friend, display and use the snake in shows since it's an impressive specimen. He's very upset when he found out Albert gave his snake away for no reason. Not your fault Tom, but it was definately wrong of Albert to do.

Check that poop for a radio transmitter Tom!

That snake was mine. Albert had absolutely no business giving that snake to you. I brought that snake down there when Albert wanted another King in addition to the two that he had at the time to use for shows. He wanted the extra snake in case the others where in shed or just ate if a show came up. I was spending a lot of time down there and considered Albert a great friend and mentor.

When they sold one of the other Kings to the zoo in Canada, and they were thinking about selling the other, I specifically told Albert that if that King ever goes anywhere it comes back to me.

All the people (about 4 people that I will not mention names) down there who know the situation, know how wrong it is. Albert lost a very good friend and long time volunteer and the respect of others because of this...

I certainly didn't know it was your snake and if you want it by all means come get it. I don't want anything that's NOT mine. In fact I felt guilty taking it in the first place[nothing to do with you]. Now I feel really bad but I had NO idea it wasn't his. Please come get the snake. I've kept him in great condition...thanks

Tom,
Sloane is a good freind of mine I am very familiar with this situation, and what Sloane had posted is 100% accurate. As said earlier by Christopher, what happened is by no means fault of yours Tom(after all,who wouldnt take a king like that?) and what you are doing is very commendable and respectable by making it right w/ Sloane. Hope all is well.

Hi Mike, everything here is great. I'm NOT trying to make anything "RIGHT" with Sloane or any one else as I've done nothing wrong in the first place. I just offered to return his snake to him BUT I'M NOT TRYING TO MAKE ANYTHING RIGHT.....

Tom,
Agreed.Making it "right" was the wrong way to put it.Offering the snake back to Sloane is great of you to do ,especially since this situation is no fault of yours like you said.

Hope to head down there again soon as well

Mike

I've fed him complete snakes 6-7' long but if bigger I give him pieces which he doesn't seem to mind. I sure like him though. When he looks into my eyes it's as if he has a soul. Kings are smart snakes. I've had many but this is only the second one I've kept and I really enjoy him. He checks things out. If he's out Patty sits in front of the cage and looks at him and he looks back as if he knows far more than I imagine he does....

I just scrolled down to see if there was any follow up to this story and am very glad it was all worked out with no hard feelings. Sure is a beautiful King. I recently aquired my first king. I was trying to think what snake I have ever had that was most like this one, including other cobras, indigo and cribo, but really, the most similar would be an iguana. That might sound weird, but it’s got alot of the same personality to me. The indigo I would say was a hundred times smarter, to be honest, but this king is incredibly interactive, alert and like you said Tom, seems to be thinking a little deeper than you are use to seeing from a snake staring at you.
