Whats wrong with my Veild? pregnant?

bigmansm Jan 31, 2010 10:06 PM

I tried my best to take a picture of my female veiled. She is about 6 months old (at most).

The top of her crown has a gray area and her nostrils had some white powdery substance around them.

Also, is she pregnant? Her belly is big and kind of bumpy looking isn’t it? I have put a bucket with 6inches of reptile bedding in there in case she is pregnant. But what is the next step for me to do if she does lay the egg? I’m not a breeder but, I don’t want the egg to just die out. And I especially don’t want my Cham to die.

The little bit of white on her head is probably unshed skin...nothing to worry about. Has she been with a male? If not then she can still develop eggs but they won't be fertile. She will still need a nest box to lay so she doesn't become egg-bound. It should be more like 10-12" deep and you should keep the soil/sand,moist. By reptile bedding, you don't mean bark chips,do you? She needs to dig in something soft. She should be fine...make sure she gets plenty of calcium and D3.

Yes, SHe use to share a cage with a male. But when they were younger. And I thought they were too young to mate.

The male started to get agressive towards her so I had to seperate them. NOW they are complete seperated.

Another thing that concerns me is, she has not shed her skin for a long time. My male has shed his skin 3 times as to where my female has only shed her skin once in the past 2-3 months or so.

I want to put the female in a larger cage, but the smaller cage makes it easier for her to find her food, so Im kind fo confused about the best situation for her.

As far as shedding,I wouldn't be too worried...her size looks fine[ I mean she is not thin ]and the males grow quite a bit larger so he would be growing and shedding more. How long ago did you separate them and how big was the male?

bigmansm Feb 03, 2010 08:51 AM

My male is about 2weeks older then she is. BUT, he is twice her size and always has been. Now that they are seperated and he is in a bigger enclousure, he is three times her size.

I didn't think these veileds would start breeding at such a young age.

Ill try and get some better pictures of her belly. But, it looks like she is STUFFED. I had someone recommend cutting back on the crickets for her to see if her belly shrinks at all. BUT, if she is truely pregnant, I want her to get as much nurishment as possible.

Where can i read more about pregnant veiled and then how to care for the eggs.

You are right...under NO circumstances should you cut down on her food, she probably is gravid. Make Sure that you have proper temps.,UVB and calcium supplement for her food. If she is healthy because of proper care then she will dig lay her eggs like she's supposed to. Make sure the digging" nest " is large enough so she can dig and her whole body can be inside the hole...at LEAST 10-12" or more. Buy a book at the pet store...browse through see the info on incubation, etc. A book will always be on hand for future reference, and they are not expensive.

She's not showing the typical mustard/yellow spots that indicate she's sexually mature....but everything isn't written in stone...so its good that you have a place for her to dig in the cage.

Does she always sit hunkered down to the branch? Does she have what looks like a second elbow above the real elbow?

The grey mark on her casque could be a burn.
The white around the nostrils is salts that they get rid of through the nose.

What specific supplements do you use and how often for each one?

bigmansm Feb 18, 2010 01:29 PM

The supplements I am using are:
Calcium and a vitamin. Both are a whiteish powder.

I feed both of my Chameleons 3 or so Large crickets a day.

The males cage has one of those Heat/UV bulbs. Its suppose to be the best UV on the market.

My females cage has a seperate heat and UV bulb. Her UV bulb is the high grade tube style bulb.

I don't buy the lower end stuff in terms of lighting.

I am looking for a larger cage for my female, trying to find something pre-owned. When i do this, Ill put a deeper bucket of dirt for her.

Ill look for the Extra elbow on her, but I haven't noticed anything like that.
