weird behavior

argos_mom Feb 08, 2010 05:37 PM

I am a first time owner, i know the basic husbandry of iguanas but Im not sure on thier behavoir. is it mating season or something? my iguana sits on his perch bobs his head and kind of wiggles his/her tail a little....its kind of like a serpentine motion. his cage is a across the room from my bearded dragon and they are looking at each other but my beardie isnt doing anything except looking. could that be the iggy trying to communicate or what? I know most lizards if not all bob thier head for courtship, dominance whatever

He's probably checking out your beardie, or you, or the ceiling, the reflections in his water dish, you bright orange t-shirt. or his food or outside etc.. lol. They are highly perceptive and see full specturm color! And as they get older and have more interactions (especially with other lizards, they communicate A lot!

lol thanks. he hasnt done it again but i think he's mad at me. I had a towel in the bottom of his cage for a while then i switched to newspaper. since ive done that, he is all over his cage...it could be he's gotten used to his cage and surroundings and is exploring more. idk. usually he sits on his basking platform most of the day. he/she is cute though. at a juvenile age is it possible to tell the sex?

I wouldn't say it's the newspaper that changed his behavior, he more then likely just needed time to acclimate to his enviroment. You'll find that the more they get use to their surroundings the more curious and fun they become. lol.

As for sexing, I did probe my new iguana but I've been dealing with reptiles for nearly 2 decades and sexing has always been a major topic for me. I wouldn't let anybody try that on a lizard unless they really knew what they were doing, if not done properly they can really injure the lizard. Some signs of a "possible" male iguana would be longer dorsal spines, a larger dewlap, larger femoral pores but again it's not a 100% guarantee at such a young age. You can post some pics and we can guess for fun lol. I know i'd love to see the little guy
