How often should fecals be done?

JSKAHN Feb 27, 2010 07:38 PM

I am adding a Sri Lankin Star to my group.I will do a fecal on him, and keep him apart from the group. I was wondering, how often fecals should be done on a group. Also, how many times should I have a fecal done on him, before adding him to the group?
Thanks, Joe Kahn

Before introduction: 3 clean fecals, two weeks apart each. If you have problematic parasites, treat, wait two weeks, begin process again. I do fecals on all my animals quarterly, regardless of how they are housed. Keep in mind if your tortoises go outside, some parasitism is likely, and oftentimes not problematic~so long as the parasite load is not too tremendous. Your vet should be able to give you guidance. (I do the fecals myself and consult with a vet on treatment, which saves me a ton of money (I have a background in clinical parasitology, along with the necessary equipment to do fecal exams, so why not do them myself?)

Hi, any vet can do a fecal... and you can look up dosing info in Maders book or they should have dosing instructions. I wouldnt drive a fecal 75 miles when it is a simple "looking for parasite" issue.
