Which snake to get.

breaker Feb 28, 2010 07:09 PM

I have a general question about which snake I should get. I want something that is at least somewhat arboreal, does not get too long (4-8ft), and is not too aggressive (I know ball pythons and such are good for that, but I do want something arboreal). I have done some research and it seems like a carpet python may be a good choice. I have not found anything that compares the two, but it seems to be a bit less aggressive than emerald tree boas. Does anyone have a say into that? When I look into care sheets, I see mixed ideas. Also, please don't tell me that anything can be tamed with a lot of handling. I have a Weber's sailfin dragon and that experience has been a nightmare because people said it could get tamed with enough handling. If holding something 1-2 times a week does is not good enough to tame something, then I don't think I want it. In general which snake makes a better pet for what I'm looking for? Any not boa/python suggestions will be happily taken as well. Thanks.

Bit snappy as youngin's, though.

Mine haven't been any worse than any other baby boas

I have a 7-8 foot male jungle carpet python an he is a great pet. Very docile with handling. Likes to be in the open. When he was smaller he wrapped around branches I had in there for him or he would go in his hide box. I still have branches for him to climb around on as well as things to hide under. (I have a big enclosure for him)

Baby JCP's on the other hand are nippy, flighty an want nothing to do but get away from the hand that is holding it. But I've been told they get better as they grow an get older.

I have been thinking about getting a green tree python but from what I've read they do not tollerate handling an they require high humidity levels all the time.

Well, just my thoughts....

Carpet pythons are usually much more docile than the more arboreal tree boas/pythons. Carpets are the closest thing you can affordably get that has arboreal tendencies.

Looking back over the years, one of my favorite boid snakes was a carpet python that I rescued when he was young. So laid back as an adult. Not huge either, which is a plus IMO. And they easily handle husbandry mistakes, which is another plus.

Babies can be nippy, as is true for many snakes. (I have a Children's python that was the devil when tiny and is tame as can be as an adult with no attempt on my part to "tame" her.)
