She finally ate!

hayseed Mar 08, 2010 07:44 AM

Hi everyone,

I posted recently about my baby blood not feeding. I got lots of great advice and I learned a lot from all the prior posts about this issue. Well she's finally eating now. I had to break down and offer her live food. As soon as she saw a live mouse she nailed it and chowed down. I guess I'll get a few more meals in her and then think about getting her switched over to FT. I guess I've learned that baby bloods can be a little unforgiving about perfect conditions and eating exactly what they want.

For anyone's future reference here's exactly what I did to get her feeding.

1. Swithed her to a smaller tub with about 40 square inches floor space.

2. Switched to a smaller water bowel.

3. Removed the hide and replaced it with a two-inch layer of moist sphagnum moss.

4. Got the temps EXACTLY right with a warm in of 86 degrees and a cool end of about 78-79 degrees.

5. Fed a live mouse. Success.

I'll try another one in four or five days. Looks like maybe she's back on track now. I'm looking forward to seeing her fatten up a little now.

Thanks everyone. All the expert advice really helped.

One of the hardest things I have had to do is unthink spacious caging for bloods. The like the tight fits. If I offer water bowls that are too large, I have snakes that wont use them. Hides that seem too small are actually perfect because they will skip the larger one for the smaller one. Moving them into racks did AMAZING for them. They really really like their tight spaces!

Yep. Cindy, I can see you are absolutely right about that. I feel good that this snake is eating now, but I can see there are no cutting corners for baby bloods!

I've never seen the spagnum setup fail to get stubborn neo bloods feeding.

Mine still refuses to eat if I'm in the room. Interestingly, would take only Live at first. Now only FT.
Rats that is.. Finally made the jump. & is he getting heavy!
