Eating Issues

scocci357 Mar 09, 2010 08:03 PM

Hi everyone..I've received lots of valuable information on here over the past 2 years but have never personally posted until now. I have a borneo stp that is reaching 3 years old who has stopped eating since the end of January. I've had him since he was a baby and had him caged in a rack which he outgrew at the end of 2009. He always has had a very hardy apetite. At the beginning of this year I switched him from a rack to a cage measuring 3' X 2'. The temps in the cage are maintained in the mid 80s (82- 85). About 10 days of being acclimated in the cage I fed him his first meal in his new environment and he ate without any hesitation. This was around the 2nd week in January. Since then he shows only a slight casual interest in any food. The only thing I did notice was that beginning in February his behavior became rather odd whereby he became very active with constant movement in the cage and moving things around at all times of day and night. Someone mentioned that he might be going through his first breeding phase. I left him alone after a couple of failed feeding attempts in early February and now his behavior has returned to normal. He just shed the other day so I have attempted to feed him again, however, he only shows slight interestbut still will not eat. I am getting concerned now since he appears healthy from what I can see but I fear there may be something else going on here. Any ideas, suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have a blood python that has not eaten in a year. Same deal, shows interest and then nothing. I see her drink water but thats it. She had not lost any body weight for a long time. I just now started seeing a little loss. I have heard about this with Ball Pythons but did not think there guys where the same. I could be wrong.

A month of not eating should be no issue. I have retics that stop in October and will not eat again until Feb, I have a Boa that stops in November and will not eat until Feb and a Ball python that stops in October and will not eat until March. Its frustrating but the more you get frustrated with it the more you will frustrate the snake. Give it a few weeks and try again. If it does not take, give it another couple weeks. You should also see signs, like when you are thawing the rat out that it starts to look for it. It could also not feel secure. does it have new hides. Just my thoughts. Good thing is it did eat in the new cage.

Wow a blood python not eating for a year?? I only thought this happened with Balls? Anyway, he's still healthy and strong so I'll just be patient and try in a couple of weeks. I know the more I force it the more I may stress him out instead. I do see him drink water from time to time and he's maintaining bodyweight so I won't get concerned. He does have adequate an adequate hiding place so I think he's covered there. I guess I won't get alarmed unless I see some physical signs telling me otherwise. Thank you for the input.

I hear ya, and its starting to worry me that she is still not eating. If my one Ball python starts to eat and she still does not eat I am going to take her in to a vet. Just to make sure she is not eating because of winter.
