I was looking to talk to some other people seriously keeping reptiles in northeastern Pennsylvania. Just wondering cause I dont find many people around me who have a serious intrest in reptiles. I mean I have seen the person that says I love reptiles and has one bearded dragon or a ball python. I was curious to see if there are anyone keeping many reptiles also people with crocodilian, large snakes, ect. I was just always wondering how many other herp fanatics are in my area.

I know the feeling I only have one friend who is in to reptiles as I am but he has MANY kinds of reptiles from crocs,18'retics to 70 lb alligator snappers, Oh yeah but he owns a zoo so I guess its not really the same. People around here dont keep the big guys.

tbone21 Mar 15, 2010 10:24 PM

Western NC. Oddly enough, we can own anything here but American Alligators...got have permits for those. Certain "common sense" regulations on it though. Gotta have certain caging, locks on the cage, things ike that. Same laws apply to venomous. But honestly, I'd rather us be able to self-regulate, then have the govenrment come in and say we can't have anything. The state legislature tried to ban everything (including "poisonous" snakes...which is ok, because I don't own POISONOUS snakes) and NCARK stepped in and said, "wait a minute, how about instead of being stupid about it, we just set some realistic standards for people to meet".

StevenOrndorff Mar 18, 2010 07:46 AM

I'm in western NC too. Near Charlotte. I agree the regs USARK got for us aren't too bad. A my stuff is locked in a dedicated hot house with locking cages anyway. That's where the caiman and big lizards are for now as well. When they get bigger i'll be building lots of fences i guess. Out of curiosity, do you know any breeders in the state? I really don't want to try to go through the paperwork to cross state lines if i can avoid it, but i'd like to look into diversifying my collection. Thanks

wlcmmtt Mar 18, 2010 07:07 PM

What are you looking for more specifically? I'm closer to the Triad area, but know a guy who breeds a good variety of hots that'd be a bit closer to you, as well as a guy in Raleigh. As far as Crocodilians, I don't know anyone. I actually got mine from Florida.

StevenOrndorff Mar 20, 2010 09:42 AM

I was refering mostly to crocodilians. What type of hots does he work with?

wlcmmtt Mar 20, 2010 07:37 PM

Monocaled Cobras, Few different species of rattlesnakes, couple different types of tree vipers (had many a breeding pair of Wagler's last time I was up), just had an awesome season for Gaboons (eastern and western.), and a few other odds and ends.

We can not have alligators here ether unless you get a education permit or a alligator farming permit that costs 350 every year.I think I would love to have the permit and raise gators but I could never kill one just could not do it.Even tho I believe if you buy it you raise it and you breed it you have the right to sell it as you please. There is a guy in oklahoma who breeds bobcats he use to raise them to about 9 months old and stretch the hide a fur farmer now he has like 50 pairs and sells the kittens .The fur brought 125 the kitten brings him 450 and he does not have to feed it long at all.

Texas is good in most places on crocs but no gators period unless you get 360 dollar farmer permit a year.Newmexico has a few stiff laws and arizona is a no go for crocs no private permit to have.

Hey Archie,
I have not even started the research as to which of the states I listed are the most herp friendly for what I want to do. I already have a zoological permit from TPWD, so I dont see why they would give me grief for moving to Texas. But maybe they gave me the permit because I live in FL but do some work in TX? I'll give them a call when that day comes. BTW the zoological permit is only $150, renewed every 3 years.

The zoological is free to resedents just hard to get.If you have it it is hard to take away so you have it made.

hi..

and why is that..?? florida has great weather for crocs

cheers

Rick

kachunga Mar 25, 2010 11:04 AM

Hey Rick,
FL has great weather for crocodilians. My fiance has aspirations of being a professional barrel horse competitor. If I didnt think she had a chance, I would stay put. But she has been competing fantastically against riders/horses with much more experience. A move to the central part of our country would mean less traveling for her to get to some of the really big money races. I agreed to this only if we could stay somewhat south. Being part reptilian, I hate cold weather.
I was also considering a career with Border Patrol or a state wildlife officer.
FL is also being a little to hard on large constrictors. They could be completely outlawed one of these days. I know its not likely, but anything is possible these days.
Finally, Ted Nugent lives in Waco and I wouldnt mind being his neighbor
