White film over eyes

CaptainFreedom Mar 18, 2010 11:56 AM

Hi,
I checked on my three Easterns yesterday who have been hibbernating outdoors; they seem well except my subadult has a white film over his eyes. I gave all three a nice warm soak. I thought that might loosen the film, but it didn't. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Is the film gooey? Frequently this just clears up on its own.

Chris,
It's not uncommon for turtles to have gummy eyes right after hibernation so continue to the soak the turtle in tepid water daily until the eyes appear bright. If it doesn't look completley better after a week of soaking and prolong warm temps-you should take the turtle to a vet for a check up. Or sooner if you notice any abnormal behaviors or other odd symptoms.
