African Pygmy Mice

AgentJones Mar 18, 2010 08:38 PM

Hey everyone,

I currently breed both rats and mice as feeders for my collection, but I also sell or give away some of the more attractive looking ones as pets. That got me thinking about breeding some of the more uncommon species of mice as pets like African Pygmy or Spiny mice. Does anyone by chance know where to find these in America? I've looked around a lot of places but its near impossible to find a breeder much less on that is willing to ship.

when i was breeding african house snakes i thought about getting pygmy mice as well. i had a real hard time finding any but did find them. the biggest part is no one will ship them live. do a search for pocket pets. alot of other things will pop up but the mice fit in the same catagory. they are out their and if i run across them again ill pm you.

Thanks I'll have to try that, I'm also going to try a few of the independent pet shops in the area just in case.

I have only ever seen these in pet stores time to time. It probably be a good idea to check your local chain and independent stores. Ask if they can order them in. Their animal suppliers may carry them but it may not be something they bring in as there isn't much demand, but they could special order some for you.

The fact they are not really available can also be a good indication they don't sell well as pets compared to normal mice, so that is something to consider, if you are just breeding them to sell as pets.

Thanks i'll have to try that. I hadn't thought about it but it makes sense as pet stores have access to wholesale breeders/suppliers that the public do not.
