Breeding King Snake Protocol

Kaleigh Mar 25, 2010 10:14 PM

Here is a fairly random question that is catching me up. I have decided I would like to use a male King Snake from someone else to breed to my female King Snake. I am trying to decide (and hoped someone else had a similar situation) what is the proper "payment" for services. He seems to think half the eggs is normal. But, I can buy a male snake with the same qualities for less than the worth of half the eggs. As with any other animal, there is either a set "stud fee" or it is equivalent to one of the offspring/pick of litter; which is never worth more than the purchase price of the animal you would like to breed to. So what do you all think? What is the proper "payment of services" for using a "stud-snake?" Does anyone else have similar experiences and could tell me what they did?

It's hard to say what normal is as I don't think this is all that common in the herp world. However the one time I did so, it was with a friend, and I gave half the litter (of boas). I got first pic, then he took one, then I, etc. He ended up not taking his full half. The difference here, is that we were friends and not conducting "business". My suggestion is to offer what you are comfortable parting with. Why not be patient and just get yourself a male? Your female will only be more ready to breed next year.

the standard breeding loan arrangment ever since I have been involved in reptiles has been 50/50 split of offspring. This wasn't carried down from the mountain and you can do whatever you both agree to but I'd say your friends right. After all your both getting 50% more than you would have otherwise.
