ASF/Gerbil tub size

krfun Mar 27, 2010 11:04 AM

I want to get my rodents out of tanks and into tubs in a rack.

What size tubs would work well for 1:3 or 1:4 breeding colonies?
What size for grow out?

I will build them with wood frame and mesh tops with the food sitting on the mesh. I guess I am wondering most about the height of the tubs so the adults and juvies can reach the food.

I have found tubs that are 4,5,6 and 7" in height. Can they reach the food at 7"? Is 1/2" mesh the right size for the tops?

What do you guy/girls use for tubs?

Thanks

I am not super familiar with rack tub sizes typically used for ASF's, but I expect anything that is good for mice should work for them. Thus, height of the tub between 4-6" should be fine.

As for the size of the wire mesh, you need it to be small enough the lab blocks used don't fall through, and big enough to allow the rodents to chew at the food.

The taller tubs, over 6" are better for rats. Pretty much you want tubs as high as the body length of a weaned rodent, unless you intend to move weaned rodents into smaller tubs till they reach adult size.
