Baby Retic Feeding

Txsnake Mar 28, 2010 05:01 PM

I just attempted to feed my retic a fresh killed mouse. He shwoed no real interest in the fresh kill. It looks like his eyes may be just be starting to glaze. I put a live mouse in the cage under under close observation for the snakes welfare. He finally got interested in the mouse and attacked.

1. Is it possible that the lure of a live mouse was too much to withstand even going into shed?

2. This is his third feeding since I have had him and his fourth overall. He still doesnt quite have everything related to feeding figured out. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

all snakes are different. some eat while going into, or already in shed, some will not. i never recommend feeding while even early in shed. the reason, is that during the shed process, the snakes body goes into almost shut down mode. metabolism slows way way down, and little gastro-intestinal motility. it is possible to have a prey item sit in the stomach to long and potentially not digest properly in time, and may cause bacterial infections. also, i would get it on rats as early as you can.

1: Live can be frequently more enticing. I'd get yours on rat pups ASAP. Mice won't be big enough for long.

2: It varies snakes to snakes. With my kingsnakes and retics, I've noticed that really young ones (about 6 months or younger) seem a lot more likely to eat in shed than older ones.

Do you think he is big enough for rat pups now? If so I will start immediately.

how big is he? I know that most non-SDs are started on rat pinks and they move up from there.

Hell I feed my SD's on rat pups to begin with. My 09 SD's are about 2" long and take pretty big rat hoppers for there size., never mice unless my sand boas do the "kill and ignore thing" then they get them as a mid week leftover snack but thats not to often.

He is about 3ft long right now. Is your recommendation similar to the others?
