fishkeeper88 Mar 30, 2010 07:51 AM

I just got my first Uros and iam sure i will have more questions but i cant find any info about this online so I was wondering if anyone here knows if its ok to feed Uros:

nori, its dried roasted seaweed they use to wrap sushi in, I think it has a fairly high amount of salt but its supose to have a lot of vitamins etc in it,
dried or fresh mushrooms
flowers from apple or cherry trees,

In my opinion, foods that you mentioned are as far as possible from what diet for Uromastyx should be. All Uromastyx are desert lizards, and they would hardly have contact with sea weeds and/or soft, sweet fruit. Tough green leaves, grasses, seeds, and pods should make the major part of their diet (I'm sure there's more than enough care sheets that define proper uro diet on the internet).

None of those foods should ever be fed to a Uro. There are far too many poor caresheets that say to feed insects and other junk to Uro's. A good varied diet should consist of:
daily use: escarole, chickory(curly endive), dandelion greens
rotational use: bok choy, watercress, arugula, radicchio, shredded carrots, shredded squash

Variety is key, switch it up as often as you can.

I know that these foods should not make up the bulk of the diet or anything, and I dont intend to give them any fruit, i just ment as the odd treat and Iam haveing a bit of trouble getting them to eat and i thought the apple blossoms might intice them a bit, Iam feeding them asorted lettuces and spring mix(no iceberg), bok choy, carrots, dandelions, iguana pellets, bird seed etc, I read on doug dixes sit not to give bean mix/lentils to new arrivals but when can i start giveing it to them in afew weeks/months?

I think the bean/lentil mixes are not good for dehydrated animals due to pulling moisture from the gut with the dry mixes. I think after the animals have been fed a good diet with plenty of leafy greens and such, and you feel they are hydrated enough, go ahead and offer the bean/lentil mix.

As far as the other food sources, not really sure. They will eat edible flowers for sure, and I see no reason NOT to feed them in moderation, or as a treat. Why not? I am sure they feed on flowers when they bloom in their native habitat. I am sure their diets cycle in the wild based on time of year, rainfall, etc.

thanks I did give the most underwieght(8" TL 52gs)one some apple blossoms to see if he will eat them nothing yet, a couple other things i was wondering are

none of them seem to eat the red greens in the mix just the green ones, they all push the red greens aside and go for the green stuff is there some reason for this? no matter how long i leave the red greens in there cages they never eat it?

and I read on doug's site about peas and they seem to be good and bad but whats bad about them? the big male loves them and is eating a lot of them right now should i limit them or feed as much as he whants?

KevinM Mar 31, 2010 01:15 PM

Not sure about the peas thing, and my pair of Malis never eat them LOL!! Mine do eat some of the purplish colored greens in the spring mix I get for them, but not as much as the green stuff. Just vary your greens with spring mix, collard greens, turnip greens, even romaine lettuce. Offer some mixed veggies every now and then. I also keep a small container of birdseed in their cage to eat at will. Mine also do not appear to be big flower eaters like my torts tend to be.

Feed the proper daily foods (those which provide the MOST NUTRITION) every day. By feeding treats 'just to get them to eat something' is a bad idea. Some of these rotational items are not very high in nutrition, and for a malnurished and underweight Uro you may want to stick with the best possible foods first. Worry about treats later.

just to update,
I have been feeding them the spring mix daily plus, bok choy, dandelion greens/flowers, and have reduced the peas, carrots etc, I also tubed the realy under wieght one with a couple ccs of warm water & pedialyte the other day wich seems to have helped him, I have also been giveing him a daily soak, though I dont think the soak is doing much, aside from him drinking a good amount of water once, so far he will only eat dandelion flowers and the odd lettuce leaf.
Iam thinking about soaking the flowers in pedialyte to help get some more moisture into him? as of today hes 55gs

also the adult female whent from about 180gs last week to 202gs this week, she has been eating a lot the last few days but the others have only added afew grams to there wieghts, could her quick gain meen she could be gravid??

fishkeeper88 Apr 07, 2010 08:33 PM

I just caught the adult pair mateing, it looked like the real deal with the females tail up over the males tail like i have seen in pics and with my other lizards, not the male ontop of her, but dos it meen any thing or is it more likey a male dominance thing? the male has been very interested in the female the last few days, head bobbing and running in tight circules around her but she has had no interest in him at all, I was thinking of seperateing them, she dos not roll onto her back just gos under the hide or sites there, when i caught them mateing i whent to get my camera and by the time i got back they had seperated. but the male was still holding onto her neck and did not let go until she dragged him under the hide, they came out afew minutes later and ate and basked and had no interested in each other at all.
