iguana questions

argos_mom Mar 30, 2010 03:35 PM

ok, I was looking at my iguana the other day and i noticed two long bulges, one on either side of the tail. would that be the hemipene? iggy is poopiing fine so i dont think thats it. but also my iguana started acting restless a few days ago. iggy will pace the cage, stopp and bobb then climb down to the ground and bobb again then go back to the basking spot for a bit, sometimes bobbing and then start all over again. im kinda green when it comes to iguanas, im used to beardies but ive had iggy since before christmas and it jjust started this week. I took him outside on a leash for the first time, would that have anything to do with it? ive seen the ocational bob but this is the first time ive seen it this much.

makes sense then...one of my friends had a huge female iguana and she was sweet as pie and very mellow. I read somewhere with male iguanas you can put a towel or stuffed animal for him to relieve his frustration and i had a stuffed iguana that i put in there. first thing he did after bobbing his head all over the cage was poop on it. what age do they reach sexual maturity? i have no clue how old he is but hes about 3 or 3 1/2 feel long. ill try to post more pics up soon

He was "marking it" as HIS. Perhaps pooping on your main squeeze is the highest form of Iguana flattery! LOL

Green iguanas start to reach sexual maturity in 2 1/2 to 3 years, when males start to go through their breeding cycle they tend to stop eating so they can spend more of their time displaying what a impressive male they are and patrolling their territory. This is what you've been starting to see, so if he doesn't eat a whole lot i wouldn't worry, just make sure you keep food out everyday he'll go back to eating normally.

not intirely sure how old he is but if hes showing the classic signs i guess its safe to say hes mature. hes about 3-3.5 feel long...i used my feet to measure so it may or may not be accurate...hes also getting orange coloration....started on his dulap or however the neck flap is spelled...its not totally orange but up until now hes been green and black....hes got orange on his legs too, just splotches here and there and his tail is a browish color instead of the green. so im guessing we are in the mating season? he has been eating, but not nearly as much but im offering. and he keeps trying to knock his uvb lamp down. well he looks like he trying. he climbs the top of the cage...well he tries lol its funny to see those back legs go. never both legs, though he at least keeps one leg stationed. hes also wanting me to touch him more. while i like that part, the pacing drives my beardie nuts.
