Rattlesnake in CA. What type?

christopher0us Mar 30, 2010 04:10 PM

A friend of mine came back from Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in southern California with this picture (hopefully it works.) Apparently he almost accidentally stepped on it within an hour of arriving at his campsite, and it had a calm disposition and just left for this brush. I'm not up on my rattlesnake species at all. From quickly looking at some internet pictures, it looks like Crotalus ruber - the red diamond rattlesnake. Any help? Thanks.

yes, definitely Crotalus ruber!. They can be extremely variable looking.

This one below looks very similar to yours there.
