Feeding American Alligator

stxlatina Apr 02, 2010 09:01 PM

I was just wondering what those that have American Alligators are feeding them. Mine has gone from croc diet to feeder rats and now is eating steak and refusing anything else. Just curious. Feedback is appreciated.

I have had simular problems, Plain meat with no bone or anything like that will cause problums later on in life, I have had gators that didnt want the crocodilian diet anymore all they would take was chicken parts and lean meats, So I took a little extra time at feeding and cut a hole in the meats and put as much croc diet as I could in the meat or chicken if the chicken has skin it holds it in great and they never knew the difference and were getting the proper nutrition hope this helps, Im sure you will get some other good ideas from this forum.

Have you tried withholding the preferred meat until the gator's appetite was up and he would take another food?

I mix up the diet for mine.
We get meat from a local grocer. They give us the meat once it gets past date for sale. I always give it to em bone and all. They all seem to prefer chicken, for some reason, but will eagerly take red meat and fish. I started, years ago, using a line/pulley system. I want them to have to work for their food and get some exercise. I simply run cable over thier ponds with the food items hangin down and make them work for it. They actually get really motivated once they see the line moving and go straight into the ponds.

I was curious about that too. I figured it just meant 6 juvies of both species.
