Burmese Brown Mtn tortoise or Red foot?

jburg10 Apr 17, 2010 07:26 PM

I have done some research on both of these species. I understand both of their care requirements and I am capable of fulfilling them. But which one is more personable? Which one would make a better pet? Thanks

I think this is a situation where each is right. I have redfoots and the black mountain torts .
I feel like the berms and redfoot are equal in "personality" You won't go wrong with either. I've have 8 redfoots , one I've had since 1978.Also, 3 phayeri that I got from Vic last year. They are doing great.

How are thier personalities as babies? Which species is more outgoing as a youngster? I have heard that mountain tortoises are very shy till they get much bigger is this true? Thanks

They sleep a lot. They love being misted, it will "bring them out of their shell" Picking them up and turning them over will make them shy. See how shy they are when offered a cooked yam! Vic

can't speak for mountain tortoises, but i think redfoots are a little more shy as babies than they are when they get bigger -- this was the case with mine. though she'd eat from our hands from the first day i got her, she'd bury herself into her substrate a lot, and if you picked her up, it was like she was on a timer -- t-minus any second 'til you got pooped and/or peed on. once she was maybe 5 or 6 inches or so in length, she hid herself less and sought us out more, and is completely mellow about being picked up -- she just dangles out of her shell and looks at you, rather than doing the old put-me-down dance.

IME, Redfoot. But that is because I do keep one. Still, more personality than my Hinge-back..
