Is there a way to train my leo to use another area to defecate in?
And even better, is there a way to train it to use a "waste bowl"?

You can try moving the waste to one corner and see if they keep using that spot. Or in the bowl if you REALLY want to try it. Other than that, they're wild animals and probably aren't going to go for it. Good luck though!

yea I would try moving the poop in a pile to the desired spot. My adults tend to pick a spot and use it about 90% of the time it seems.
