Why my veild sits on the cage floor?

kenyanpat85 Apr 18, 2010 09:08 PM

Hey everyone, my girelfriend and I have a gorgous veiled chameleon female, she tends to like to sit at the bottom of the cage either 1. hanging from the branches or 2. coming right down on the flkoor where i have a heat pad.....( the room can get cold not cold enough to hurt her though) so we were curious if we should be concerned shes eating a ton of 2 week old crickets, shes misted 3 times a day and the cage uis hot spot 82, cool temps spot 79 ish...she is in great health and fed amazingly.

she doesnt need a heat pad. or even nightime heat, she can take a lot colder temps than you can. in fact a night time temp drop is considered good. but she does need a regular incandescent house bulb of about 40-60 watts. for uva basking at the top of the cage at a temp of about 90* she also needs a lineal (long straight tube, not the folded cfl)reptisun 5.0 for uvb and absortion of calcium and d3 she also will not survive long term of of a diet of just crickets, she should have at least 3 different types of feeders every week. chams go to the floor for different reasons , she could be going to hunt or she could be going for the heat, but going to the floor is often a sign of something more serious, what kind of lighting do you have, what are your basking temps do you use a dripper, what is your suppplementation schedule, your supplementation schedule should be similar to this calcium withoutd3,3-4x a week, calcium with d3 1x every 1-2 weeks and a multivitamin with proformed vitaminA (like herptivite not reptivite) 1x a month varying too far from that routine, will probably lead to problems and failure to leartn your chameleons care requirements will certainly lead to problems. http://www.chameleonforums.com/basic-husbandry-38769/ jmo

if she continues to do it after her heat pad has been removed, and proper lighting dripper installed, then a trip to the vet is probably in order. the sad truth is, once chameleons show signs of serious health problems, it is usually too late to reverse.
