small bumps under skin, olive python.

aera Apr 25, 2010 10:13 AM

I have recently purchased a young male olive python. After recieving him, I noticed some small bumbs under his skin, mostly on one side of the snake. The bumps seem to be evenly spread out, almost a if the ribs of the snake make them more prominent. They are very difficult to feel (very soft) but if I hold the snake and let him crawl through my hands , they become more visible when he relaxes his muscles. He eats great, has a fiesty attitude and overall is looking good. As this is a recent purchase, I am wondering if this something to worry about (obviously I am) or if I am being paranoid. I have read a bit on the subject and the only results I read are poss subcu nematodes.
Any help or experience would be appreciated.
Matt

You might take it to the vet to see if they are pentastomids. Not good if so.

The other possibility is water blisters from too damp of an environment, that have gotten infected.

Is this a Papuan olive python? If so, I have noticed these on imported Papuan olive pythons and they have, in my limited experience, disappeared on their own in time. Presumably it is some sort of parasite, but it doesn't seem to stay there. It is never a bad idea to go to a vet for excision and proper identification, but if it is an imported Papuan, that probably isn't necessary. I remember those bumps use to freak me out too and I was sure that I must do something, but they went away.

I would assume he's talking about Aussies.

Yes, probably, although I saw an imported Papuan in the classifieds recently that didn't stay listed for long.

Blisters in a captive born animal could be from different causes, although excessive moisture is one of the most common reasons. I've seen it in plenty of other species and if the humidity is corrected i.e. they aren't allowed to sit in water or wet all day- it generally resolves as it sheds out.

There are many things that could cause bumps under a snakes skin. Personally, I would see a vet. I know of no bumps that are "normal".
