Need Help Sexing Tort

turtleyenuff May 04, 2010 03:56 PM

Hi,
Can someone take a stab at sexing this tort? Sorry, the tail is cut off and it's not the best but it's the only pic I could get.
Thanks!

I am curious why you can only get one picture which was taken at an angle and with the tail not showing? If you are a buyer looking at the animal, that fact alone would make me suspicious that the person who sent you the photo is trying to hide something.

That being said, it looks like a probable male to me from everything I can see: a hint of plastral concavity, plus the tail looks wide at base.

Good point Bill, You most likely got it right but they need to send a better pic. VM

Yes, that pic was from a seller. They don't know too much about torts (this is their only one), so don't know how to sex a tort or really know how to take a good plastron shot. I did get them to take another.

This is a much better photo for sexing the tortoise. It appears to be a female in this one. Anal scutes have a good "V" notch and the tail looks short. This tortoise looks about 10-12" long. Is that correct? Which type of Leopard is it?

Thanks!
I agree, this picture makes a big difference and just goes to show how important it is to get the right plastron shot. The tort is about 10" and I am pretty sure it's G.p.babcocki, which works for me because that is what my male is. I am going to drive out and take a look today. Thanks so much for your help!

Good luck! Let us know what the tortoise turns out to be sex-wise ans whether it is the babcocki or pardalis subspecies.
