question about retics?

cmac107 May 05, 2010 04:01 PM

i really want a retic.i have been keeping snakes for a few years now, mostly king snakes and ball pythons, but no really big snakes. would a retic be a good big snake to star out with? how fast do they grow and if they are not a good big snake to start out with what would be a good suggestion? thanks!!

Retis are a huge commitment for many years-not only the time involved in caring for one but the expense for proper food and cages. Retics are very interesting and rewarding captive snakes but also very large and powerful. I usually recommend getting larger snake experience with a boa and then a burm. But some jump right into retics. There is also the super dwarf retic option. Reticulated pythons can exhibit explosive growth when fed often-as much as a foot a month. Do a lot of research, read everything you can find, and then locate a retic keeper with adults near you. Spend some real time with adult retics and the keeper. Handle them and see them eat. Then you can decide if you really want to commit to raising a retic. Bill
