Baby black rat snake, harmless. What part of Va do you live in? There are not may venomous snakes in Va, Google Timber Rattler, and copper head. New borns of copper heads or timber rattlers about the size of your black rat snake would have bright neon yellow tails, they do everything to let you know that they are dangerous. And seriously, you don't have to kill them, just teach your kids to let them be.

I live in Southwest Virginia, too; Russell County. Black rat snakes are by far the most common species I see. A great site about the snakes (and other reptiles and amphibians) of VA is: http://fwie.fw.vt.edu/VHS/reptiles/snakes/snakes_of_virginia.htm
