UV and pygmy chameleons

ram May 07, 2010 12:50 PM

I have some vivariums that were once used for dart frogs and would like to keep some pygmy chameleons in a few of them. I was wondering if it would be possible to house pygmies in vivs with no supplemental UV lighting like I did the dart frogs. I supplemented regularly of course with repcal and herptitive, would this be OK with pygmy chameleons?

I'm not sure there is a definitive answer to this. I think most keepers do provide some UV. It is simple to do and safe. A single linear tube ReptiSun 5.0 on top of the terrarium would be sufficient. If in doubt, provide it. I know I would.

I have kept pygmy chameleons for a couple of months. I have used a regular incandescent light bulb, and they have been fine so far. Considering their native environment, there probably isn't a considerable amount of sunlight reaching the forest. I haven't had a problem yet, but I'll re-post if something comes up.

I meant there probably isn't a lot of sunlight reaching the forest floor.
