Anybody seen any box turtles lately?

exreptile May 09, 2010 02:28 AM

I haven't posted on here in a long time, been busy with work and stuff and forgot my login info but just found it. I'm just wondering if anyone has seen any box turtles yet this year since this warm weather has started. It has been warm in Northeast Alabama since mid-March and I have just seen my first boxie of the year last week crawling across my driveway. Then a snapping turtle basking near a creek on the side of the road down the street from my house.

Thanks, Cliff

No, but I haven't been out looking yet, either!

I've seen a few in South Carolina. The first one had emerged from hibernation and was near the hole in the ground.A few days later I went back and he was in the same place dead.I also found two others in the same area that appear to have died during the winter. It was unusually wet and cold this year and looks like it may have taken a toll on the boxies.I've also spotted a few live adult boxies that were light but otherwise seemed Okay, and a pair breeding a week ago.Luckily all of mine made it through hibernation OK

i've seen a handful here in sc,too.i live just outside charleston, and actually rescued a stunning orange male from the middle of a 4 lane highway.i was going to release him,but after much consideration ended up taking him home to pair up with my high-orange female.i almost never keep turtles i find, but there is alot of new construction going on in the area(i found him near the new boeing plant under construction),and it would only be a matter of time before he would be in the road again,as much as males roam this time of year.
