Need help. My caiman never goes on land

ginya May 11, 2010 06:48 PM

I just recently got a caiman and I recieved no information whats so ever on how to take care of him.

I made a land and water area for him with heaters but he spends all his time in one spot in the water. He never seems to move at all.

Am I doing something wrong?

There are a few books on the subject as well as the internet has many sites you can read care instructions. If you have a smoothfront or a dwarf it is not likely to comer on land around you or where you can see it.Always research an animal before you own one.

Thanks. I'm just worried I was doing something wrong

Honestly the only thing you did wrong was take in a animal that you have no experience caring for. Whether it was the excitement of getting a caimen or maybe you were just trying to help another inexperienced individual out, only you know the motive for getting it.
Your caimen is fine and most likely adjusting to its new owner and surroundings. It wont come out of the water until it feels comfortable.

Thanks for the help. I know careing for a caiman takes experience but he was going to die if I didn't take him. I'm doing research.
Thanks again

Have you determined the species yet?

Im pretty sure he's a dwarf caiman. I'v looked though a lot of pics and read a lot and it seems to match him. I'm just worried he's sick or scared.

Well, theres two species of dwarf caiman. Theres Cuviers and Schneiders. Either one is significantly smaller than other caimans/crocodilians.
Just leave it alone for awhile. They are both very shy and secretive.

I've never seen mine on land and i've had it for about 6 months. I know he goes up there though because i've found droppings under his basking lamp. I've never seen her eat either. I put the food on the ramp up to land and leave. It's gone when i come back. She just refuses to let me watch. I've even tried hiding to watch but it never works.

Mine does the same thing, he's very shy. I was just worried he was sick or I was doing something wrong.
Thanks for the help
