Double Clutching?

Yani45 May 13, 2010 11:41 PM

Hey all,

I just discovered my blacktail laying eggs for the second time this year!

She was with the male only once last fall, and she has already laid over 20 eggs in early March. I did not reintroduce the male- she seemingly just retained sperm.
She single clutched last year and the year before.

Anyone ever had a dry double clutch? Intentionally or unintentionally?

Well if you get double call yourself lucky.

Nice looking Black tail too, similar to my male:

I just can't take as good a picture.

I guess this means I'll get a lower price on one of the babies

That's really cool John. I've never heard of ANY dry' double clutching.

You may have something that's never happened in captivity before.

How long ago was the first clutch?

The first clutch was 3/3.

After asking around a bit, I've now heard of a few instances where drys have "accidentally" double clutched. It's certainly a rare occurrence though.

I choose to take it as flattery that my female is so robust, well-fed, and healthy!

One of my BTs double clutched last year.

Unfortunately, I had no idea she had done so and found the eggs way later and lost them.

Feed um up with good stuff and pair um up again. Robert Bruce has had second clutches from his Eastern Indigos. My hunch is that in captive conditions if a female has a real good diet in that she does not exhaust her resources trying to make good eggs that it can be done. I had a second clutch from my unicolor hatch with success and all came out hyper and healthy.......(Sighthunter at Maxes house in Texas)

With this talk about double clutching. It would be interesting
to know the average number of clutches to expect from a female
say eastern and the most anyones had or heard of?
