Any ways to get boxies to mate?

johnnyd5844 May 14, 2010 05:38 PM

Hi
I have a group of 3 box turtles. I think one is a female and 2 are males. I have had the female and one of the males together for at least 3 years and they have never bred. I keep them outdoors in the summer and bring them in durring the winter. Is there anything I can do to encourage them to breed? By the way they are all full grown.

Replace the "familiar" male box turtle with the other male and see what happens.

Plan B: grind up a Viagra pill and slip it into his food.

What are your objectives, and your state's regulations?

I ask because many states have possession limits, regulations on sales and/or exports, release of captive bred individuals, etc.

have you hibernated them?i noticed you said you brought them in during the winter, but what temps do you keep them at then?
i live in sc,keep my boxies outside during the summer, and bring them into the garage during the winter,so that they can have a mild hibernation(doesn't get below 48 degrees or so).oncethe temps hit the mid 60's or so outside,i move them back outside, and by the time the temps are in the 80's(like now),they males are breeding machines, trying to climb on top of anything that doesn't move away to fast, rocks included.

I just want to hatch out a couple. I am in NJ and it is legal to posess them you just cant sell them. They did not hibernate, I brought them inside. I dont really know how to hibernate them but will look into doing it for next year. Thanks for the help

usually boxies have to hibernate(especially the males),in order to be productive.i put mine in a little kiddie pool from wallyworld,a little over 6' across, maybe 2' deep.you know, the cheap($10 or so) heavy plastic ones.i dump 7 or 8 bags of cheap topsoil into it(no additives or fertilizers, just plain topsoil),add 2 water dishes(actually 2 large pyrex casserole dishes,9"x13",and let them go.they'll bury themselves down, and i usually won't see them for a couple months, unless there's a warm spell.always provide water, dehydration is one of the leading causes of death during hibernation.

this set-up has worked great for me for a couple years now,and i can use the dirt the next spring in my flower beds, prefertilized w/ turtle poo.

Thats a cool idea. Does it work in freezing temperatures? And do you think I can put the pool in my garage? It is not heated and will still drop below freezing in there. Thanks again;

megalon May 16, 2010 07:07 AM

i keep mine in the garage.my garage is partially insulated,(because of my frog),so it stays warmer than outside.the coldest it got in the garage was about 45,and thats when it was in the teens and snowing outside.i hibernate all my turtles that need it in the garage, haven't lost one yet, knock on wood.
if your garage does dip below freezing,i would add 2 or 3 more bags of dirt, and top that with some leaves,to kinda insulate them a bit.
are your boxies wc,or cb?also, are they native to where you live?
if they are native to where you live, then they should do just fine in the garage, seeing as they would naturally hibernate outside.just give them 2 or 3 months of cooler temps, and warm them back up gradually, and you should have boxies going at it in no time.

They are cb. They are 3 toeds I think. I was told two of them were three toeds and one was an ornate. But the one that I thought was an ornate has 3 toes on his back feet so does that mean he is a 3 toed? I dont think they are native to NJ but I think the climate where they are from is similar to NJ.

StephF May 16, 2010 06:55 PM

If they are 3-Toeds, consider the fact that 3-Toeds can be VERY challenging to sex...you may not have any females at all.

megalon May 16, 2010 08:11 PM

i did not even think about that possibility.my experience is with easterns, and my eastern/ornate hybrid female.all i know about 3 toes off hand is that they don't always only have 3 toes,4 toed 3 toes are actually relatively common.
