Rieppeleon brevicaudatus care

blueta May 20, 2010 10:46 AM

Hello all. I'm considering getting a pair or trio (1.2) of bearded pygmy chams. I have a question about food. I don't really like the idea of crickets anymore because of smell etc, but was told to use roaches. I am new to roaches and don't know where to start or which ones to use. I would also like to know of any care sheets or other husbandry info anyone has. Thanks for your time.

There are several roach species to consider. The most widely liked is Blapterus dubia or the Ecuadorian cave roach. A producing colony will provide many small nymphs. The adults are pretty easy to deal with...don't climb much at all, don't fly, a bit slower moving too. I haven't kept brevs yet but know there are some other feeders you can culture...rice flour beetles, rollie pollies (sow bugs), springtails, and some others I can't recall at the moment.

There is a good care article on the ChameleonForums.com website that is specific to brevs you should read. Also check for past articles on the Chameleonnews.com ezine, and the ADCHAM website.

Thanks for the info. I am getting out of dart frogs and have been culturing bean beetles, springtails, and fruit flies (melos), for some time now. I actually want to skip out on the flies but the beetles and springtails are easy enough. I'll check out that care page you listed. Thanks!
