Sexing of Philodryas baroni

biologen May 21, 2010 02:47 PM

How deep is the males hemipenis pouches? And how deep is the female? I got three animals and when trying to determine the sex, two of them was almost the same depth and the third one we nearly couldn´t get into. I bought them as 2,1 , but I am not sure that we sexed them right...

If the P. baroni are adults, the shape of the tail behind the vent will be enough, as in many snakes, the males have bulkier tails, however, lone females may look like males due to the strong and large tail of thsi climbing species, if you wont probe, you need to be able to compare several of them
That said, it is not unusual that when males are handled, they evert their hemipenises
Males will probe to 15-18, females 2-5
I hope this helps,
David

I agree with David,

P.baroni probe much the same as most colubrids. Females also tend to get much larger than males. Hope that helps.

Cheers
