Should I Relocate Toad to My New House?

02transamws6 May 22, 2010 02:19 PM

I've been living in the same house for about 6 years and have had a friendly toad that lives under my deck for most of that time. I'm moving to a new home in about a month and was wondering if relocating the toad is a good idea? The new house also has a large deck that he could live under and there's a decent sized pond a few feet away from the deck. The main reason I'd like to relocate the toad is that I'm afraid the new owners of our house won't keep an eye out for him like I do and might run over him with the lawn mower. I also don't want to stress the animal out by moving it, so I'm kind of torn as to what to do. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Adam

It sounds like the new place is a good setup makes me think another toad might be around somewhere. If you move a new toad in to the teritory of another toad you could start a fight.

I definitely don't want to do that. I'm not sure what I should do.

Have you checked out the place? Can you go there any time ,if you can see if another toad is around . If you can't find one you might be alright.

Yes I'm definitely going to scope out the area first and make sure it looks relatively toad-free before I relocate him. I truly hate to disturb this animal as it's lived under my porch and/or deck for at least 3 or 4 years, but I think his odds of survival are better moving with me rather than staying with the new owners.

No, leave it where he is at. There are many risks to moving them like that. For one thing, many species have great homing instincts and will leave the new place to find their original home. Also you could be possibly spreading other things such as bacterias, fungi, parasites, chitrid fungus, disease, etc.
