I need help.
About 5 or 6 years ago I bought reptile spray for my snakes at a pet store. I came to find out there was another product sold at Walmart that is the same thing. I compared them and the ingredients were 100% identical, and the cost at Walmart was about 25% of the stuff I bought at the pet store. I can’t remember the name of either of them. I’ve looked at Walmart to try and re-freshen my memory with no luck. I do remember the stuff I bought at Walmart was in the pharmacy section on the shelf along side of anti-bacterial spray and such. Does anyone have a clue what it might be. I’m kind of thnking Walmart does not sell this stuff anymore.

Thanks for any help/replies !

I do recall the same, but have never actually seen the product at Walmart. I don't recall brand names but perhaps using the search function and scanning all the mite threads may prove helpfull. I"m all for using cheaper, generic products if they are equvalient, but be certain they are indeed the same. For example, if one is water based, and the other oil based, then even if the active ingredient is the same, the product is different; oil based products allowing for more cutaneaus absorption. And of course be sure that the concentrations are the same as well.

Perhaps simply googling parasiticide may find you what you are looking for?

I don't remember the name brands either. but I did buy something at Walmart years ago. I found the info I used to start with on another reptile site, and as I said, I compared the 2 different brands and they were 100% identical. I cleaned my boa and tank last night. Just found bunches of dead mites in there again. Logging off and going to Petsmart and Walmart in search of mite killer !

The Walmart product is Equate Bedding Spray (for human lice) and is identical to Provent A Mite but costs $4 per can. I have used Equate for years with great results. Main thing is the Equate Bedding Spray does not have directions on the can for reptiles-never spray a reptile directly. Remove reptile/water bowl. Lightly spray substrate/cage furniture and let dry 30 minutes-very important. Replace reptile/water bowl and repeat in two weeks. Give it time to work.

When you buy Equate scratch your head vigorously at the check out-that will really freak out the clerk-major lol. Bill

Bill is absolutely correct in that the main active ingredient as Permethrin, is identical to that in PAM, and is in the same concentration as well. And for you chemistry geeks, the cis/trans ratio for Permethrin in Equate is also very close to that used in PAM. However, Equate uses a slight amount of petroleum distillate as a carrier and that is really about the only significant difference. Because of that, take extra care to see that the spray or residue does not come into direct contact with the snake.

I used it sucessfully many years ago by spraying the empty cage interior and letting it set for 30 minutes. I then wiped out the residue with paper towels and then sprayed the exterior of the cage letting it air dry only. The cage was then substrated and the snake returned to the cage. The water bowl is placed in the following day. I had excellent results with no health issues, even with smaller snakes. As Bill also mentioned, it may take a few attempts and is not an immediate fix, but is safe and very effective if used properly.

Do you know anything about Nix brand lice control? Will that work for mites?

If I remember correctly, I believe NIX has twice the concentration of permethrin than Equate does so I would be very hesitant to use it. If its a liquid spray and not an aerosol, you could dilute it by half and use it the same as the others. I would never use anything with a permethrin concentration above 0.50% around any reptile, and never get any of these solutions directly on the animal in any manner.

The amount of permethrin is .25% in Nix, it is a bedding spray so would only be used as a mite prevention.

If that is the case, it could be used with the same procedures outlined for the Equate spray. Just avoid the direct and residual contact issues and it should work with no problems.
