Wild EBT in NJ

Woodnative May 25, 2010 07:22 AM

I recently finished a small revegetation site in NJ, near the Delaware River. The surrounding area is somewhat urbanized but there is still some woods. I was happy to find this healthy, young adult female soaking in a puddle left in a low area on site. She had the finest sprinkling of orange speckles on her shell. Not gaudy, but a pretty individual as are most EBTs. Hopefully she will stick around and lay eggs in this area too.

That's great! It's amazing how they can be found so close to urbanized areas up there. I almost wonder if there is a "selection" of non-wanderers, since many areas of NJ have been built up for quite some time.

I used to spend a ton of time around certain tributaries of the Delaware in South Jersey, fishing for bass and catfish. My favorite was Crosswick's Creek (long time ago, spelling may be off) near Bordentown. We would commonly see box turtles in certain areas. It's nice to think that they may still be there.

I see my photobucket attachment did not work....my fault.
Kensopher.....I have been thinking about the nonwonderers in NJ for some time. there is a very isolated, small patch of land behind my work in Edison, which is ver urbanized. This "island" has a small but apparently viable thus far population of EBTs, I have found a juvie along with adult males and females, some very old. Anyway, any wanderers in this population were long ago selected out.
